Launch of Art Exhibition

March 12, 2014 by zarganar

After 18 months of hard work, our Human Rights Art Exhibition is now live. Last night (Tuesday 11th March) we welcomed the Mayor of Christchurch John Lofts to offically open the Christchurch end of the exhibition.

Many of the artists who had submitted work turned out, along with group members, friends and well-wishers.

We had quite a crowd, as you can see below. Thanks to the staff of Christchurch Priory for their help in hosting the launch, and for letting us have the church as a venue. They have many visitors who come to admire this beautiful, historic place of worship, so allowing us space in a venue not designed for pictures (you can’t nail or screw into 900 year old walls!) was particularly nice of them.

Autumn Quiz 2013

December 10, 2013 by zarganar

picture quiz
………. picture quiz sample……. who are these 3 “wise” men?

Our Autumn Quiz made £137, plus provided a nice “relaxing” evening’s entertainment. New quiz setter David Rogers did set the bar fairly high, although all questions had at least one correct answer from the nine teams battling it out!  Sally Hawksworth didn’t take any nonsense as new quiz master (mistress?). In the end there was only 1/2 point dividing the top two teams – the difference between a bottle of cheap wine or a packet of Halibro (perhaps in future don’t rely on the Treasurer to buy the prizes!).

The Britannia in Lower Parkstone was again a very agreeable venue – and they do not charge.  Whilst David and Rosemary Brown will return in the Spring, we need a new venue. ye Olde George Inn in Christchurch has turned their function room into a restaurant, so will no longer be able to help out. Any suggestions?

For those who were not there,  please send an email via the contact link and we’ll send you the questions – with and without answers. The men above? The Heads of MI 6 (Sir John Sawers) GCHQ (Sir Iain Lobban) MI 5 (Andrew Parker). Easy!!!

Bournemouth Street Collection 2013

September 30, 2013 by zarganar

Another year, another attempt to squeeze a few coppers from the busy folk of Bournemouth. Despite good weather and lots of people, we yet again proved to be invisible to the masses. We raised £142.48 – not a huge sum, but “every little helps”. Thanks to everyone who turned out.  The photo sums up what its like out there with an Amnesty collection box in your hands…bournemouth street collection amnesty international

Christchurch Street Collection 2013

August 15, 2013 by zarganar

Thanks for everyone who helped out with last Saturdays Street Collection. christchurch street collectionThe middle of August isn’t the best date – we have no say over when allocated – as many usual helpers were away. So it was great to make £91.65 – only slightly down on last year. Thanks again to all who turned out.

Art Exhibition Update

June 25, 2013 by zarganar

There never seems an ideal time to do this as things are moving at a huge pace. But we’ve finally hit the Bournemouth Echo – twice!! – so it must be happening. Thanks to Genevieve Talon for her persistence, as there was a good article on Monday. This followed a short piece the previous week – as in the photo below.

If you are new to the whole concept of an Art Exhibition, firstly check out the Art page. Following our successful music event in 2011 we decided to follow up with something else that would attract the interest and attention of the wider public – not just Amnesty followers. An Art Exhibition appeared an ideal medium, as the theme of human rights would also given opportunity to create discussion and debate around Amnesty Internationals work.

leafletOver the past 8 months a small sub-committee has got the project off the ground. From our initial enquires it became clear that the event couldn’t happen in 2013, as most venues were already booked. But we have now lined up venues such as Christchurch Priory, Red House museum, St Peters Church and the Lighthouse in Poole – with negotiations continuing with others. The main exhibition looks set for Spring 2014 (the Lighthouse may well be Autumn – wait for updates!).

Energy has also been spent contacting 6th Form College Art Tutors and  professional and amateur artists and art groups. We have distributed our leaflet far and wide. We have started to get enquiries about how to submit entries. Its happening! [Read more…]
