Bourne Free and AmnesTea 2022

July 22, 2022 by zarganar

AmnesTea

In June, at the start of Refugee week, Lucy Freeman hosted another AmnesTea at her home in Southbourne. This was an excuse to drink tea, eat cake and but some of the many donated books. Like Bourne Free, this was the first for a few years. But the weather was kind and we raised £100. Many thanks to Lucy for hosting (and doing alot of baking!) and everyone who turned up and donated.

Bourne Free

We had doubts. Having attended successful Bourne Free’s in the Lower Gardens for 5 years until the pandemic hit, we were surprised at the move to Meyrick Park. Also that it was no longer a free event and it would cost £20 for anyone to access the site. We knew at least one local charity had decided against attending because of this.

But the organisers knew what they were doing. It was them who wanted the large expanse of Meyrick Park – and the crowds flocked in. With an afternoon and evening of live entertainment, plus many stalls and other attractions, you could argue that £20 was good value.

The weather was dry and very hot. There was a constant steam of people passing our stall, many stopped to have a “Love is a Human Right” selfie or a sticker. But we got many to sign our petitions – 190 signatures. These were for the release of Zahra Sedishi-Hamadani  and Yulia Tsvetkova

An Iranian gender nonconforming human rights defender Zahra Sedighi-Hamadani, known as Sareh, has been arbitrarily detained in Urumieh, West Azerbaijan province, since 27 October 2021 due to her real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity as well as her social media posts and statements in defence of LGBTI rights.

Feminist activist and artist Yulia Tsvetkova, who was charged with “disseminating pornography” for creating body-positive illustrations of female sexual organs, a crime punishable by up to six years in prison, At the time of Bourne Free her trial was in progress. On 15th July she was acquitted of these absurd charges. It has since been reported that Russian prosecutors have now appealed that decision.

Wright 4 Rights 2021

December 11, 2021 by zarganar

Group members at Bournemouth Library, with an onlooker!

Thanks to everyone who supported us today at Bournemouth Library. It is more challenging trying to engage with passing members of the public whilst wearing a mask, but we got a very positive response. It was quieter than 2 years ago, as there were no other events at the library, and understandably fewer choosing to visit with the new mask  restrictions applying.

Many thanks to the library staff for their help in facilitating this event, ensuring everything was in place for us, and then individually showing interest in the campaign and signing cards.

We Return to Moordown Community Centre!

September 8, 2021 by zarganar

We are delighted to announce a return to Moordown Community Centre (MCC) on Thursday October 7th 2021,  7.30pm. We last met there in March 2020, little knowing we would have such a long break.  So do join us for this relaunch.  The agenda will be updates on campaigns, some letter writing and planning for the future.

We are guests of MCC and ask all attendees to adhere to whatever procedures they have in place for minimising the risk of spreading COVID-19. The group has done a risk assessment, which will be frequently reviewed, to ensure the meetings are also conducted in a way to minimise this risk. This will be pointed out to attendees on arrival and again we ask for your cooperation. It shouldn’t need saying, but please don’t attend  if you answer yes to any of these screening questions.

Syrian Conflict: the Human Impact

October 4, 2020 by zarganar

Talk by Revd Dr. Andrew Ashdown Wednesday 21st October 7.30pm

Jane Waller from the New Forest Group recommended booking the Revd Dr. Andrew Ashdown. She attended a Zoom talk of his on Syria and found it very informative (and well presented).  Whilst the talk will highlight the dire situation and flag up some Human Rights abuses, he is not an “Amnesty specific” speaker.  Over the years the New Forest group have always worked to a very different model to ourselves. They would book a speaker of interest, related to human rights issues but not usually specific to Amnesty International, roughly every quarter. This would be open to anyone, but usually led to new members to the group.

Jane attended the talk when Andrew presented it to the Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group (SWVG). They are a group of volunteers who befriend and support adult asylum seekers and refugees in the Southampton area. (Andrew is from Romsey).

Andrew sent us the following:-

“The Syrian conflict: the human impact.

Revd Dr. Andrew Ashdown has made multiple visits to Syria since 2014, (and visited the country several times before the way) and has travelled extensively in Syria as a guest of local Church communities.  He has visited communities close to the frontlines and most affected by the war, including many internally displaced, and refugees in Lebanon and Iraq.  Last year, he was awarded a PhD for his thesis on Christian-Muslim relations in Syria both before and during the war and the importance of the Eastern Christian paradigm in that dynamic.  His work will be published in a book by Routledge in November for global distribution.  As well as continuing a priestly ministry, Dr. Ashdown is Manager of Good Governance and Advocacy Development for an International Charity.

In this illustrated talk, Andrew will describe the complex, diverse religious and social landscape of the country, some of the realities on the ground during the war, and the human impact of the conflict.  There will be time for Questions and Discussion.”

So this promises to be an informative and interesting talk. If undecided, you may wish to look at the slides from Andrews talk to the SWVG.  We doubt if he will use them all, as he said he will talk for an hour or so (there are 69!).

If you wish to have an invite, please contact us. We are likely to promote this talk and let other groups know, and there is no way of predicting how popular this will be. So please “book” by letting us know as soon as possible. Once we reach the limit set by Zoom we will have to say no to further requests.  Reminder –

Group Newsletter June 2020

June 18, 2020 by zarganar

Welcome to the latest newsletter.
The next meeting  is on Thursday 18th June 2020, 8.00pm, – on ZOOM.  After the inaugural Zoom meeting last month proved a success, we will give it a go again this week. Its more of a discussion than a meeting. There will be updates on Europe and Refugee week – more details below,
Please reply to  this newsletter if you would like an invite.

Refugee Week 15 – 21 June

The week after next is Refugee Week – a time when we can all celebrate the contribution refugees make to the UK. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Imagine’.  Unsurprisingly, most activities will take place online this year.

To find out how you can take part, have a look on the Refugee Week website. There are  films to watch, writing workshops, book launches, virtual exhibition tours and much more. We are expecting a mailing from AIUK with further actions, which we hope to discuss at Thursdays Zoom meeting. So hopefully we will send out a brief update after the meeting.

Europe Newsletter

As you will have noticed from the last couple of newsletters, we have focused quite alot on human rights issues in Europe in recent months. Sadly there are many. Consequently we thought it useful to start posting the newsletter put together monthly by Ulrike Schmidt, AIUK’s Europe Coordinator.
This edition has issues and updates on Turkey, Hungary, Italy, France, UK and the Roma communities.

South America Newsletter

The June edition of the South America Regional Newsletter is now on the blog. Our group has focused on South America since its inception. The, now just, 2 volunteers who run the network for AIUK – and produce the newsletter – do a huge amount of work on our behalf.
The Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on human rights is discussed in relation to several countries. Plus updates on many other ongoing issues.
