South America News and Action Update March 2015

April 6, 2015 by zarganar

This is the latest newsletter from the South American team. Its copied virtually verbatim – obviously we’ve not tried out all the links!

Summary

The last month has been eventful. In this update, we draw your attention to developments in Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Chile. We also provide a link to the English version of Amnesty’s recent report on Defending Human Rights in America, and to the relevant country pages in Amnesty’s Annual Report; and highlight a potentially important regional initiative on the rights of indigenous people. As always, we would welcome any feedback on the actions that you take.

All three of us shall be at the National Conference and AGM next month. We shall be at the Country Coordinators’ stall during the breaks in the conference proceedings. Please come and say hello.

In the last month we have circulated six Urgent Actions. We have referred to these under the respective country headings below. These are all still “live” so there is still time to take action on them if you haven’t managed to do so yet.

Our Facebook page continues to build a larger following. We now have 81 followers. If you haven’t already done so, please “like” us and encourage others to do so too:

Venezuela

Our featured action this month follows the killing of a 14-year-old boy last month during an anti-government protest amid reports of excessive use of force by the security forces. There are concerns the violence will intensify if the authorities do not send a clear message that peaceful protest is permitted and that excessive use of force will not be tolerated. I attach a suggested letter to the Venezuelan authorities, in English and Spanish, in both Word and PDF format. Further details are here:

Syria Refugee Crisis

March 28, 2015 by zarganar

At the last Regional Conference in Bristol, we were given some chilling facts and figures about the plight of Syrian Refugees and the lack of action from many countries such as the UK. Currently Syria’s neighbours – Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt – are shouldering the responsibility by hosting 97% of Syria’s refugees. Syria refugee crisis
This infographic illustrates the scale of the crisis, and the poor response internationally. What we also learnt was that on 2 December 2014, Malvern Council voted to allow 60 Syrian refugees to be resettled in the Worcestershire town, following sustained encouragement from the Malvern Hills Amnesty group. This shows what can be done…..

Please email us if you want a full size version of the infographic (although if you right click and “open in new tab”, you should see a larger version.)  See also   http://www.amnesty.org.uk/blogs/campaigns/fifth-anniversary-syria-crisis-tragically-looking-all-too-likely

Newsletter March 10th 2015

March 10, 2015 by zarganar

Hello

Welcome to the latest news from your local Amnesty Group. Apologies for short notice of the next meeting, which is our AGM, but your editor has had major computer “issues”.
Our next meeting is Thursday, 12th March 2015 at 7.30pm at Moordown Community Centre, Bournemouth. On the agenda:-  AGM (including discussing/adopting constitution – see attached document); feedback from Regional Conference; General Election Strategy.

Spring Quiz

quiz nightWe are back on track with our popular Spring Quiz. This is now organised for Friday April 24th at the Brunswick Hotel, 199 Malmesbury Park Road, Charminster, Bournemouth BH8 8PX.
For those unfamiliar, our quizzes are informal but competitive! Teams of up to 6, which can be formed on the night. Singles and couples get added to other teams, usually leaving teams with at least 4. Entrance to £5, pay at the door.  David and Rosemary Brown will return as hosts, so put it in your diary now.

China Campaign

Another date for your diary. We have provisionally booked Andy Moody, AIUK China coordinator, for a talk at our monthly meeting in Moordown on the 14th May. However, this is subject to confirmation. More details next month.

Raif Badwadi

Raif BadawiA few weeks ago the plight of Raif Badawi reached the BBC news. He received the first 50 of 1000 lashes on 9th January, but then subsequent floggings have been postponed on medical grounds. He still has 10 years in prison to serve, simply for blogging about free speech.
Its important to keep the pressure on. Firstly there is a petition – currently passed 1,000,000 – and there is also an email you can send to Simon Collis, the new Ambassador of the UK to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia have recently hit back, saying it “expresses its intense surprise and dismay” over international criticism. This followed criticism by German vice-chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, who described the punishment to Raif Badawi as “unimaginable”, ahead of a meeting with the Saudi King.

Bric-a-Brac

jewelleryIn the past we held many stalls at Trade Union Conferences when they visited Bournemouth, plus we had our own Garden Party.  Times have changed, but as reported above, Ted and May still turn out at a variety of Fairs and Carnivals – such as in Winton, Boscombe and now Muscliff Funday!
So if you have any jewellery (even broken), scarves, handbags (particularly evening), bric-a-brac or other knick-knacks in any condition that you wish to donate, please let May Stevens know (01202) 510886. They can collect.

Newsletter February 7th 2015

Hello

Welcome to the latest news from your local Amnesty Group
Our next meeting is Thursday, 12th February 2015 at 7.30pm at Moordown Community Centre, Bournemouth. On the agenda:-  South America discussion and letter writing

Regional Conference in Bristol

Its been quite a while since we’ve had a Reigional Meeting of any description; there used to be quite frequent gatherings in Salisbury.  There is going to be a Regional Conference in Bristol on Saturday 21st February 2015. There are more details here. If you are interested in going, please contact organiser Caroline Butler asap (booking essential). caroline@futura.com

Amnesty Books

You may be aware that across the country there are several bookshops run by Amnesty International, mainly for fundraising. For over 10 years there has been an Amnesty Bookshop in Bristol, sellings CDs and DVDs as well as books. As there will be at least one car going to the Regional Conference in Bristol, if anyone has some books they wish to donate we can pass them on. Please bring to the next meeting or reply to this newsletter.

South America Newsletter

For longer than most of us can remember, our group has been linked to South American actions.  The national coordinators publish a regular newsletter giving updates on the countries they cover – check it out on our blog.   At the bottom are a few links to actions. We will be focussing on these at our next meeting.

Cuba

For several years our local group has campaigned on behalf of prisoners of conscience in Cuba – at our last meeting we planned to do more letter writing in January. Since then, there have been historic moves to normalize diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba and the release of Alan Gross and the 3 remaining Cubans of the Miami Five. Please see the full press release here:-
http://www.amnesty.org/en/news/usa-cuba-prisoner-swap-must-spur-historic-human-rights-change-2014-12-17
“This release after more than a decade and a half behind bars in the USA, following proceedings that fell short of international fair trial standards, must come as an immense relief for these three men and their families. Concerns raised by Amnesty International and others over their trial and treatment should have prompted US authorities to grant these men clemency years ago,” said Erika Guevara Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty International

Thanks to…

Everyone who turned out for the Quiz Night organised by Bournemouth University Choir. The event raised £750 for Amnesty International. Special thanks to Wendy and her team from the choir for putting the event on.

South America Newsletter February 2015

February 6, 2015 by zarganar

Below is the latest update from our South American coordinators – Ian McGarr (Colombia); Richard Crosfield (Brazil); Graham Minter (Rest of South America). Our group been specialising on South American actions for most of our existance – sadly, despite successes, there are always more to follow.

Brazil

Good news! The National Truth Commission’s final report (December 2014) marks an historic step in Brazil’s efforts to obtain justice for crimes against humanity and other violations during the military dictatorship that took power five decades ago. The commission spent two years investigating the thousands of cases of torture, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and other violations dating back to the period of military rule in Brazil from 1964-1985. For Amnesty’s press release read here.
We brief both the Brazilian Embassy and the Brazil desk at the FCO on Amnesty’s concerns for human rights in Brazil. In the case of the Brazilian embassy, we ask them for specific actions to be taken by the authorities. And we carry on asking them until we get a reply.
We have again been in touch with the Brazilian embassy to get answers to our appeals on behalf of the four casefiles that are active at the International Secretariat. They include Laísa Santos Sampaio (death threats, protection, illegal logging) and Alexandre Anderson de Souza (death threats, protection, unsolved murders, damage to the environment), which have been adopted by AIUK groups. And Jorge Lázaro Nunes (Black homicide, police ‘disappearance’, death threats, protection) and the Guaraní Apika community (Land rights, death threats, protection) that have not yet been adopted by AIUK. The Embassy have promised to get answers to our appeals. We have also provided the embassy with recent AI reports on Brazil. [Read more…]
