South America Newsletter June 2025

The newsletter is due to be published any day now. In the meantime there has been an update on the Venezuela Urgent Action.

On 9 May 2025, lawyer Eduardo Torres was last seen in Caracas. After he left a meeting in the Parque Central towers in Caracas and called his wife, telling her he was going to walk to their home. Then his whereabouts were unknown. Previously, the human rights defender was subject to harassment by Venezuelan security forces. After concealing Eduardo Torres’ fate and whereabouts since 9 May, high ranking Venezuelan authorities confirmed his detention on 13 May and disclosed he was being held at the infamous El Helicoide in Caracas.

Other human rights defenders are also being arbitrarily held in this facility, including Javier Tarazona, Rocío San Miguel, Carlos Julio Rojas, and Kennedy Tejeda. These detentions and related international crimes fall within a systematic attack on civil space and human rights defenders. We call on Nicolás Maduro to immediately release all arbitrarily detained individuals and ensure their rights to life, physical integrity, and fair trial are respected.

The easiest way to write a letter (email to Venezuelan officials is not currently suggested as being effective) is to use the letter created via the AIUK Urgent Action page for the 4 prisoners previously know about and edit to add Eduardo Torres details.
